Our teachers


The founder of the New Kadampa Tradition is the most kind Venerable Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche. For over 30 years Geshe Kelsang has transmitted a complete lineage not only of pure teachings and insights, but also of prayers, ritual practices, sacred art and music appropriate to the needs of modern people and delivered in the local language. He has also established a vibrant ordained community and trained hundreds of qualified lay and ordained Kadampa teachers.

Geshe Kelsang has founded more than 1100 meditation centres and groups in over 40 countries. He has created the International Temples Project with the intention to establish Temples throughout the world.

Although Geshe Kelsang has now retired as Spiritual Director, even at the age of 84 he works tirelessly to help spread the precious teachings of Kadampa Buddhism.

Kelsang Chöyang is the Resident Teacher at Joyful Land Buddhist Centre. She has studied under Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche for 22 years, and has taught in British Columbia and California. Chöyang has been a nun for 17 years and is known for her sincere & practical approach to integrating Buddhist teachings into daily life.


Kelsang Lamden has been studying Buddha’s teachings for over a decade and has been teaching regularly for several years. She presently teaches at Joyful Land Buddhist Centre on Wednesday evenings. With her profound experience and love for Buddha’s teachings her classes are enjoyed by all who attend .

Jeanne Paquin

Jeanne is a long-time practitioner, and has been teaching for several years. She presents these thoughtful teachings in a very practical and light-hearted manner.


Jane Douglas

Jane Douglas has been studying Buddha’s teachings for over twenty years and
teaching for several years. Her wealth of knowledge and extensive experience make her teachings extremely practical and enjoyable.  She presently teaches our Foundation Program at Joyful Land Buddhist Centre.


Ananda Kelly has been studying for over a decade and teaches the children’s program here at the main centre (adults are welcome too). Her loving heart and happy disposition is loved by all the children who attend.  


Steve Grover has been studying Buddha’s teachings for several years. He presently teaches on Thursday evenings at Joyful Land’s main centre. He presents teachings in a humorous and practical way.

Jim Moore has been studying and teaching for numerous years and now teaches on Tuesday evenings at Joyful Land Centre and in Orleans for the spring 4-week series.

Toolika Rastogi is a longtime practitioner and teaches the Learn to Meditate classes which is held on occasional Saturdays.
